Wood Floors

Beautiful, sustainable wood

As a natural, living material solid wood showcases a building’s architectural design, creating an indoor environment that is both beautiful and functional in equal measure. Due to its tough, resilient and forgiving nature wood is exceptionally well suited for flooring, providing a rich depth of colour with the added benefit of exceptional durability.

We offer a complete installation, repair and refinishing service for all types of solid wood floor and some engineered floors, where suitability allows. The three main types of wood flooring available can be categorized as follows:

Solid wood planks, typically 18 – 25mm thick are manufactured for direct fixing to floor joists or a suitable sub-floor base using “secret” cleats or specialist fixing adhesive. Overlay planks typically 10 – 14 mm thick, as the name suggests, are designed to be overlaid on top of existing floorboards etc. often incorporating a 2 – 4mm underlay.

Solid wood blocks, often laid to herringbone or similar stylized pattern for effect, vary in thickness from 14 – 28mm. They are normally fixed directly to a stable, concrete base using a high bond adhesive. Traditional blocks require further sanding to remove discrepancies in thickness between individual blocks; in doing so this provides an overall, uniform flat surface. Modern manufacturing techniques are now employed to produce parquet blocks incorporating tongue & groove technology which negates the need for final sanding, making them a very cost-effective option.

Engineered planks are produced in a range of thicknesses, typically 14 – 25mm incorporating a 2 – 6mm wear layer of solid hardwood, glued to a plywood base. They are less susceptible to moisture and humidity changes compared to solid wood planks and are the preferred choice for many domestic and commercial situations at risk of liquid spillage or temperature variation between rooms. Each manufacturer specifies different methods of installation; cleats, spring clips, adhesive etc.
